“This is an opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself with like-minded, similar-
valued people who you will stay with for the rest of your career and maybe life. I literally met
lifelong friends.”
Steve Camilleri – Executive Director South Bend Center for the Homeless, Signature Program Class 32
History of Leadership SBM
What started 50 years ago as a need for stronger community leadership has grown into a community of
leaders almost 3,000 strong. Through leadership programs for adults and youth, Leadership SBM has been shaping the future of St. Joseph County since 1974.
About the Programs
Leadership SBM’s programs are based on a servant leadership model and encourage and prepare our participants to be leaders in their homes, community, schools and places of work.
What you can Expect
LEARN about the successes and challenges that are happening in our community through visits to local civic, non-profit, and business organizations and hear from current community leaders and activists.
DISCERN where your gifts and passions lie: skills-building and discovery exercises are part of our programs. Our participants learn about themselves and connect with their gifts and passions to use them for the common good.
MOVE to service: upon completing a Leadership SBM program, you will be challenged to take your passions to the next level and commit to serving your community whether as a volunteer, through non-profit board service, or by taking on new roles in your workplace or school. 2025 Lifetime Legacy Award
Peter and Mary Lou Mullen are pillars of the South Bend community, dedicating over 50 years to service, leadership, and positive change to our area and beyond. Their combined impact spans economic development, social justice, education, and community enrichment. From Pete’s leadership in business and government to Mary Lou’s tireless advocacy for children, women, and community wellness, their contributions have helped transform the region. And their commitment to LSBM has been just as impactful, with Pete having served as President of our Board of Directors. Their lives embody the values of Leadership SBM, and their service to our community is unwavering.
Together, the Mullens’ efforts have created positive change and inspired others through their example. They personify servant leadership, and their efforts have created a better place for all. Their combined contributions across leadership, service, and advocacy is why we are proud to present them with the inaugural Leadership South Bend Mishawaka Lifetime Legacy Award.
Thank you, Peter and Mary Lou Mullen for being such an integral part of our community and representing what it means to be a servant leader.
